Christmas Cookies Made with Real Food
Ever since my girls were little, Christmas cookie season has been one of our favorite family traditions. But instead of using brightly colored food dye we love coloring our Christmas cookies using real food.
It started years ago when I discovered Danielle Walker’s gluten- and dairy-free cookie recipe. It quickly became our go-to, simple, delicious, and perfect for decorating. We pair it with Miss Jones organic, coconut based frosting, and that’s when the real fun (and science) begins.
Coloring Frosting… With Food!
Over the years we’ve experimented with all kinds of natural colorings. The girls love turning it into a science experiment, watching whole ingredients transform into fun colors!
Here are some of our favorites:
✨ Green
Matcha Latte powder (I like Four Sigmatic. They come in single packets)
❤️ Red & Pink
Freeze-dried strawberries or raspberries
(We grind them in our coffee grinder to make a fine, bright powder.)
💛 Yellow
Turmeric
(A tiny pinch goes a long way!)
❄️ White
vanilla uncolored frosting
Fun Toppings for Decorating
Chocolate chips (eyes, noses, buttons—endless possibilities!)
Shredded coconut (great for snow, fur or hair)
Crushed peppermint candy canes
The best part? The kids get to feel like little food scientists, discovering that beautiful colors don’t need to come from a lab, they can come straight from real foods.
Will You Give It a Try?
If you’re looking to make memories, reduce additives, and infuse a little creativity into your holiday baking, try coloring your cookies with real food this year. It’s fun, it’s empowering for kids, and it shows them firsthand that real food is colorful, playful, and delicious.
